Summary / Synopsis
My prison pen pal got the electric chair. So how can he sext me from the grave? Prey: I see dead people, and not just the men I murdered. I'm in danger of being committed because I can’t tell what’s real from my hallucinations. Everyone thinks I’m crazy when the serial killer I jilted starts haunting my house. He assassinates any man who shows me interest, leaving their body parts under my pillow. During the day, his gaslighting destroys my peace of mind. But at night, he invades my nightmares and makes me crave the depravity. Predator: She ghosted me at the altar. Now, I’m aching for revenge. I want to break her, piece by delicious piece. Revel in her terror. Bathe in her screams. Make her moan my name. Someone from her past wants her captured or dead, so it’s up to me to protect her from the shadows. She belongs to me and no one else—body, mind, and soul. If I don’t take out her enemies, I’ll lose more than just my beautiful obsession. --

My Takes
I spent the first 50 chapters trying to figure out if this guy is alive or dead. You are mainly in her perspective at this point so it is hard to tell. Amethyst is not well. Her proclivities to be turned on by violence seems to stem from childhood trauma and abuse. Honestly she is till abused but I digress.
Amethyst our FMC is in her twenties. She is “dating” a death row inmate who we find out cut out his own mother’s heart. I think this speaks to Amethyst because her parents are so affluent to her that she, deep down, would love to do the same to her own parents. Xero is our MMC and he is a true psychopath. The first 50 chapters are her guilt of missing his execution and his “ghost” terrifying her while killing anyone who talks to or touches her.
This is one of those books where it is fine for the book, but in real life no one would actually like it. It is definitely a “that’s not romance, that’s a felony” situation. As a side note any man reading this, no woman would like to slap her own tits. At chapter 58 I almost DNF’ed the book. There are several just ridiculous things that is claimed but the one that got to me was him having dick piercings in prison. That he got to keep them while he was on death row and that they would put him in the electric chair with them in.
This broke the 4th wall for me and completely took me out of the book. I had to stop and talk to my book club girls to see if it was just me or if they too thought this was a bridge too far. They agreed.
So I went off and read a different book and came back. I am not sure why. Am at chapter 70 now and we are getting more of his point of view. I hope this helps me understand why he feels the need to torcher someone he claims to love. I know not all love is good love. Some love is unhealthy and dangerous, but that is why we call it dark romance.
The next 30 chapters do get better and as we get to the actual climax of the book, of course it is over because it is a cliff hanger book.
We did get some little twists and turns but nothing that blew me away. It felt more like a Scooby Doo reveal than than a plot twist to me. I will say I have read Gigi's books in the past and I really enjoyed them. I think this one was just not the winner I had hoped for with all the hype on social media.
